This is a beautifully written and researched traditional mystery story
of the same sort of ilk as John Buchan and was fairly enjoyable for the
most part.
Unfortunately, it seems, that this books greatest
strength is also its weakness. Just as I was thinking that the story was
getting stale, or repetitive, or too tame it picked up a little. But it
only picked up a little, after I had begun questioning its momentum. A
perfect thriller keeps piling on the surprises or tension or leaves it
just long enough to lull into a false sense of security. Unfortunately
this book on more than one occasion lulled me into a legitimate sense of
boredom.
It did not happen at every turn, but it was enough to tarnish an otherwise well polished adventure mystery yarn.
