Exactly what Robert B. Parker was put on this earth to do...
This is a beautifully riveting, well-plotted and thoroughly engaging mystery/thriller in the Spenser series. Parker really refined the whole chandleresque story down to a purely pulp venture. Spenser may not have the perfectly humanistic identity of Marlowe, but his more aggressive dynamic allows the stories to whip by that little bit faster.
With wit, quips and shots,
Parker gave us back pulp,
But every time I read,
I forced back a gulp,
For despite all his greatness,
He gets not Chandler's throne,
But for all Marlowe smack-heads,
Spenser is our methadone.
