Dream Girl by Robert B. Parker - A Review (3 Star)

I've been reading a fair few Spensers lately on account of other books letting me down and my subsequent recovery via familiarity. Of the handful I have read lately, this was definitely the weakest.

The plot was very thin on the ground with a single series of events running through the middle and a lot of psycho(over)analysis happening around it. It was a fairly brave story in that it tried to look at some of the darker aspects of what happens to people when they get involved in the seedy prostitution underworld - not just the threat of physical harm, but the psychological impact there also. Unfortunately it only dabbles in this lightly and, combined with a half-hearted plot, limits the level of satisfaction.

It still gets three stars because it is still well written and the Spenser & Hawk comedy/action duo can not fail to make me smile at least once per chapter. However, it's still that grape in the bunch that never really got to grow like the others. Maybe I'll leave it out in the sun and see if it turns into a raisin.

...oh wait, I don't like raisins....

...and the grape thing was just a metaphor, it's really a book...

...I think I'll just put it back on the shelf and read something else.
