Here comes my first Amazon review of my Second book, A Horse Named Morbid:
"There are two excellent reasons for reading this novel ...
First,
the writing is superb. Mr. Thurlby certainly has a way with the
language, often powerful and direct, alternately subtle and seductive.
As with his first novel, there are phrases which took my breath away, a
surprising and endearing bonus in a genre which is not overflowing with
great wordsmithing.
Second, Marshall, the anti-hero protagonist,
is one of the most fascinating characters I've ever encountered. He's
full of contradictions, anomalies, frailties, scars, flaws, and
self-sabotaging inclinations. He works hard at being amoral, often
appearing to be brutish. He's a drug addict! Yet, somehow you have to
love the guy! Maybe he's a reminder to us all that even in our best
moments, we all still carry with us permanent imperfections and the
potential for catastrophic self-destruction. But we still must give it
our best shot, hopefully survive and triumph, as does he. It's
Marshall's steady and unflagging determination to get the job done and
set things right that drives him and gives the story a spellbinding
momentum.
This novel is the second of a series which takes place
in a dystopian future not so far off that we don't see signs of it
already in our own lives. In that way, perhaps the story serves as a
preemptive warning on both a personal and societal level. If things
don't change, as with the main character of this intense and intriguing
book, we will all be faced at some point with the fundamental but
daunting challenge of surviving enormous mayhem and chaos, just making
our way one-day-at-a-time through the morass of our own psychological
prisons and the war zones of a society in shambles."
