Another Couple of Reviews....

"Although I'm not all that fond of dystopia, this book hit it out of the field out of the park. It was an ominous background, dark that's for sure but nothing to dwell on. In fact I think that the dystopian background brought the story itself to the forefront.

Told in the first person, Marshall, the protag, along with his mother and father played a part in the collapse of government and order. With this collapse Marshall lost his family, everyone who was important to him also including his brother. Poor Marshall, his brother seems to do a drop-by every once in a while especially when everything around Marshall is crashing.

Marshall works for an investigative agency and he hates his job. The agency is the closest thing to law that's left. And of course, lawlessness is everywhere.

He’s an independent sort who gets the job but done and be damned the rule book. So if no one follows the rules why work at all? Unfortunately some people have costly little habits and Marshall’s costly little habit is Rems. What??? Rems? Hummm, Rems = heroin = horse. When he’s lucid enough he realizes he should drop the expensive habit. But now? No, not yet. Not today. Maybe tomorrow. And with all that, I still like the guy. There are some enjoyable and even lovable things about him and he would certainly keep someones on their toes since trouble seems to follow him.

It took me a few minutes to wrap around my head to this barren land of nothingness and the hamlet where the horse died (or was killed.) But Thurlby's clear description was on the mark with first class writing.

All of the characters are clearly drawn. Thurlby uses clip and clear sentences where it looks as every word was carefully chosen...every word is needed and necessary. The area is dark and foreboding and I was always waiting for something to happen next.

The writing overall was superb as was the dialogue, scenery, action and the summary. All great.

The book is a trilogy but A Horse Named Morbid can definitely be read as a stand-alone. However, I'm anxiously awaiting the last of this excellent and readable Marshall series."

" I ready Phillip Thurlby's first Marshall Mystery, which I liked and have been waiting for his next - Finally it is here and this one is even better! I loved this book; The imagery is superb, metaphors inventive and effective and I loved Marshall's cynical wit. You should read this book - I couldn't put it down. I just hope that Marshall Mystery 3 isn't too far away"
